Lithium Batteries

break the Pulse Current

Limitation Barrier

Lithium Thionyl Chloride bobbin type batteries are ideal for low current applications. With their simple, hermetically sealed construction, very low self-discharge rate (typically 1% per year) and a proven shelf and operating life of over 10 years, Lithium Thionyl Chloride batteries are found in all type of critical applications. However, limits on the current that can be drawn from the battery have restricted the capability of this battery technology to deliver its full capacity under high loads. All this has changed!

Introducing Pulses Plus

Tadiran Batteries has introduced Pulses Plus batteries specifically for application requiring low background currents combined with high current pulses. Pulses Plus batteries combine the inherent benefits of bobbin type Li/SOCl2 / Li/SO2Cl2 cells with a novel hermetically sealed Hybrid Layer Capacitor (HLC).

This new battery technology can be used to efficiently deliver pulses in the range of 50 to 3200 A*Sec per pulse (up to several amperes), with a voltage window between 3.9 to 3.0V. Moreover, this basic "building block" can be connected in series and/or in parallel for higher pulse capabilities and higher voltages.

For example, the space saving Pulses PlusTM "AA" size battery delivers comparable pulses to spirally wound "C" and "D" size cells. Pulses PlusTM come in sizes "AA" to "DD" as well as multiple Cell / HLC packs. Tadiran’s Pulses PlusTM battery technology offers a unique combination of operational advantages over spiral wound Lithium Sulfur Dioxide or Lithium Manganese Dioxide cells:

These features combine to make Pulses PlusTM the ideal power source for many long term independent, stand-by, and high current pulse(s) applications, including:

GPS / GSM / ARGOS Related Systems

GPS (Non-Automotive):

The Hybrid Layer Capacitor (HLC) is patented.

With the addition of a Hybrid Layer Capacitor, Tadiran Batteries was able to enhance the performance of its Lithium Thionyl Chloride bobbin type batteries to satisfy large pulse current applications, providing equipment performance (and greater safety) compared to jellyroll construction (spirally wound) type batteries. This patented technology improves the performance of the bobbin type Lithium Thionyl Chloride technology, without affecting its best features and many advantages.

In long life applications, where the lithium batteries are used as the main power source, the electrical current profile consists typically of a low background current of several micro amperes coupled with high pulses of several of amperes in the milliseconds and / or seconds range.

The practical ampere-hour capacity and higher energy density of the Pulses Plus batteries enable these batteries to compete effectively with Lithium Sulfur Dioxide and Lithium Manganese Dioxide batteries when safety, long operating life, size or weight are design considerations.

Batteries for ASSET/ container/ trailer or cargo tracking:

Our Pulses Plus lithium batteries offer many advantages to manufacturers of Vehicle or Container Tracking equipment based on GPS, RFID, etc. For stand alone systems, where the asset is to be stored disconnected to an outside energy source for long periods of time – for example, in a lot, warehouse or on a train, the Pulses Plus battery can assure long operating life without the need for charging or connection to other power systems. Additionally, the Pulses Plus can operate at temperature ranges of –40’C to +85’C unlike other batteries that can only run between –10’C to +60’C. The low temperature has been a problem in designing stand alone systems in the past. According to a study by CARGO SYSTEMS entitled "Recent Development In Container Tracking Technology", most users prefer to replace batteries in 30 seconds and not tie up the container for 2 hours in order to recharge the batteries. Since the Pulses Plus battery is disposable, it allows for a quicker container turn around.

Batteries for Mayday / Emergency Roadside Assistance Systems:

Our Pulses Plus lithium batteries offer many advantages to manufacturers of Emergency Roadside Assistance Systems. For systems installed in vehicles where the main battery is down due to cold weather or an accident, the Pulses Plus battery will be an effective power system ensuring that help will arrive on time. Additionally, the Pulses Plus can operate at temperature ranges of -40’C to +85’C unlike other batteries that can only run between –10’C to +60’C. The low temperature has been a problem in designing emergency systems in the past. According to a study by "The consumers Electronics Manufacturers Association", 70% of people surveyed wanted a device in their car that can send emergency signals. With the Pulses Plus, your system will always be ready.
