Information processing, communications, production processes . . .
without data processing the wheels stand still.

Modern information technology has become an indispensable requirement in the running of our private and business lives. Computer systems assist man, and in the industrial sector for example, facilitate processes which would not be possible without them. The electronic revolution is still in its infancy. The complexity and speed of EDP systems is increasing.

Developments in the automation of industrial processes are extremely fast. The probability of system failures increases at the same time.

Computer systems have no say without a trouble free power supply

The enormously important role played by an interference-free power supply clearly makes risk analysis imperative. The VDEW (German Association of Electricity Supply Services) comments: "Due to the increasing performance, processing speed and integration level of electronics, the requirements placed on the quality of power supplied to EDP systems are so high that the necessary energy cannot usually be drawn directly from the public supply network".

The Facts:
Nearly every day a mains failure occurs that lasts longer than 10 ms and seriously endangers the operation of computer centres.

16% of all malfunctions in compu-ter centres can be attributed to technical problems. The power supply is one of the problems.

50% of all risks arise from mistakes and negligence. This also applies to incomplete safety strategies.

Mains disturbances are the cause, loss of income is the result.

We protect you from both.

Many businesses are not aware of the very real threat which is posed by database loss. The re-assembly of lost data is in most cases impossible or extremely time-consuming. Production breakdowns reduce efficiency. An analysis made in the USA forecasts the survival times of the following sectors after the failure of their EDP systems:

- Banks 2.0 days,
- Commerce 3.3 days,
- Industry 4.9 days,
- Insurance companies 5.6 days.

These facts clearly show how important an intact power supply is and the significance an UPS system has for your company.

Protect the income -
-take stock
The safety balance sheet clearly shows that investment in an Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a decision which protects your earnings.

The formula:

What your UPS system must be capable of:
look at objective criteria.

Only one of many problems, and certainly not the most frequent.

Disturbances in the power supply, with their disastrous effects, can be both numerous and unexpected.
These mains disturbances include:

- Short breaks
- Total failures
- Frequency deviations
- Voltage deviations
- Glitches
- Harmonics

All load disturbances must of course be taken into consideration when choosing the correct UPS system:
- Non-linear loads
- Load changes
- Unbalanced loads
- Overloads
- Peak currents
- Short-circuits
- Mains feed back

Only UPS systems with electrical isolation provide full protection for loads against all potential risks.

Only UPS sets which meet all the requirements offer uncompromising security.

There is no question that the UPS set must have a high degree of intrinsic safety in order to provide this protection at all times.

The UPS system must have all the required characteristics. It must ensure a consistent power flow over the entire sine wave.

Essential UPS performance is very much dictated by the technology used in its output stage.

Two systems are employed:

Natural voltage generation

Synthetic voltage generation

The graphic illustrates the comparison of the systems in the practical situation: The red line shows the typical load current waveform of a large computer centre. The distortions in the current wave-form clearly show the effects of non-linear loads.

Important features are high distortion factors and crest factor (peak currents) up to multiples of the rated current. Other events are short-circuit currents, for example.
In systems with synthetic voltage generation (grey and green lines) semiconductor inverters and series filters produce an incomplete sinusoidal output voltage. The current-carrying capacity of these components and thermal overload capability is limited by the technology. The performance is therefore irregular. Current spikes are not always taken care of, short-circuit currents can not be generated. The oscillatory characteristics of the filters, triggered by the load currents, is also a problem.

Only the conventionally-generated voltage (blue line) offers full performance and therefore complete protection over the entire sine wave.

Piller has therefore developed a breed of UPS systems with true generator-type power generation. This is the UNIBLOCK - a combination of the latest power electronics and a unique electrical machine. It guarantees unrestricted energy flow under all load conditions. Just like the alternator of a power station, the UNIBLOCK produces a flawless sinewave. Only then is maximum security and flexibility guaranteed. The widest range of loads can there-fore be supplied without problems, both initially and through any upgrades.

The UNIBLOCK UPS performance makes it the leader in UPS technology

Only the UNIBLOCK, with its naturally generated voltage offers risk-free UPS operation. The powerful, flawless output voltage guarantees full performance over the entire sinewave.

Innovation for your benefit:

Few components - many functions
The construction principle of the UNIBLOCK system combines a motor and a generator in one, three-phase synchronous machine. The windings of both components are incorporated in a shared stator and are excited by a common rotor. The energy transfer from the motor to the generator takes place via direct magnetic coupling without loss and without electromechanical conversion. This provides electrical isolation between the mains supply and the load.
The advantage of this form of construction is a machine with high load-carrying capacity, is robust, wear-free, highly efficient, can be loaded continuously and overloaded and has outstanding technical characteristics.
