POWERBRIDGE - IN BRIEF:
Kinetic Energy Storage Module
for dynamic and static UPS Systems

Piller's dynamic POWERBRIDGE is a vertical low speed, steel flywheel. It stores energy of 1650 kW for 10 sec. and operates within a speed range of 3300 to 1600 rpm. A redundant converter system delivers the constant output frequency during discharge. Flywheel and Generator are mounted on a common shaft. The high technology of magnetic supported bearings and very low friction losses guarantees a very high efficiency.

More Reliable
Eliminates long strings of batteries and connections

Predictable
Precise state of charge is known at all times

Requires Less Space
Fits in areas too small for batteries replacements. Ideal for containerised installations

Lighter
Can be installed where structural limitations preclude batteries

Environmentally Tolerant
Temperature fluctuations do not affect ride-through time or product life, eliminating the need for air conditioning in most installations

Simplified Maintenance
Eliminates the risks from exposure to batteries, reduces operational disruptions, and minimises labour

Lower Installation Costs
Reduces the cost of equipment, installation, facility preparation, and construction

Lower Life Cycle Costs
Eliminates interim battery replacements and reduces maintenance

Predictable Cost
Eliminates unscheduled maintenance and battery replacements, allowing for accurate budgeting

POWERBRIDGE
Dynamic / Kinetic Short-Term Energy Storage - Up to 16.5 MWs

Energy storage with almost unlimited lifespan and simple installation

Substantial cost advantage. No additional plantroom space, air-conditioning or eventual special disposal needed.

High reliability, -no restrictions of room temperature or ageing.

POWERBRIDGE
Dynamic / Kinetic Energy Storage Module
Short-Term Energy Storage. Up to 16.5 MWs

Bridging of mains failures
No-break systems today are required to supply power of 1 MW or more, with bridging times from 10 seconds to several minutes. The important factors are high reliability and long life. The capacity is only needed from time to time, specifically in the event of a mains failure. Until such time, the storage system operates in a 'charge-maintenance' mode

No batteries needed
The disadvantages of using batteries are their weight and high maintenance costs. If autonomy periods of less than one minute are needed and are sufficient, then the capital cost is also high. Furthermore, temperature limitations for lead-acid batteries lead to an economically restricted operation.

Remaining battery charge capacity can only be assessed by indirect methods. With the POWERBRIDGE the state of charge is always easily determined.

POWERBRIDGE
A dynamic/kinetic stored-energy system, the POWERBRIDGE is capable of storing 16.5 MWs => 1100 kW for 15 seconds !

POWERBRIDGE can provide sufficient kinetic energy to ride through a mains failure during the period a diesel or gas engine needs to start up non-stressfully.

POWERBRIDGE is a vertically-mounted stored-energy low speed flywheel system.

By using a DC connection energy can be supplied from 3600 down to 1800 revolutions per minute, during which 75% of the stored kinetic energy will be discharged.

The vertical arrangement of the POWERBRIDGE ensures low mechanical load and thereby high reliability. The system is brushless and requires very little maintenance. POWERBRIDGE can be operated at ambient temperatures between 0°C and 40°C. This avoids special air-conditioning (which would be necessary for batteries). Additionally the space needed for the unit (installed in a cabinet) is relatively low at only 2120 x 1320 mm.

Short-term bridging
15 seconds is sufficient in order to bridge nearly all mains failures. A recent analysis showed that less than 10% of all outages are longer than 100ms and only 1% are longer than 10 seconds. This means that 99% of all outages can be overcome using the POWERBRIDGE without resorting to alternative power sources.

Long-term bridging
Existing diesel-UPS systems consist of generators mechanically linked to a diesel engine. They are designed for almost unlimited long-term bridging. In the event of a mains failure the diesel engine is started and after a successful run up, is coupled to the generator. During the start-up period the generator is maintained at a constant speed by using supplementary kinetic energy. For this, several techniques are utilised which are however very complicated. They quickly wear out and therefore need intensive maintenance. Furthermore these systems possess a relatively small amount of energy so that only short-term bridging is possible. This means frequent starts are necessary since the diesel engine must be started within 100ms of a mains failure. Consequently the diesel engine wears out quickly due to very frequent stressful starts.

The ideal system:

POWERBRIDGE with TRIBLOCK Link to TRIBLOCK

The TRIBLOCK is based on the proven technology of the PILLER UNIBLOCK system, a unique construction of a synchronous motor and generator in one housing. The POWERBRIDGE supplies the kinetic energy to bridge power breaks for the start-up period of a directly-coupled diesel or gas engine.
POWERBRIDGE can supply up to 1.1 MW for 15 seconds. It will also ride through brownouts of 50% for at least 30 seconds, consequently it is only necessary to start the diesel engine non-stressfully after several seconds have elapsed.

POWERBRIDGE
A DC Link for new UPS Systems' or as a replacement for existing batteries.

The POWERBRIDGE consists of a vertically-mounted combined flywheel and shaft with a synchronous generator. Designed to operate within a speed range of 3,600 down to 1,800 rpm, the unit is capable of delivering up to 16.5 MWs.

High power Density - Small Foot-print. Weighing just 6,000 kg, the unit is cased in a steel cabinet 2120 x 1320 and 1900 mm high, giving a low space requirement for high power density.
