PowerStor Supercapacitors

Cooper Electronic Technologies introduces Cooper PowerStor® Aerogel Capacitors, unique ultra-high capacitance devices based on a novel type of carbon foam known as carbon aerogel. These “supercapacitors” are Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitors (EDLCs) and have 2,000 times the volumetric capacitance of standard aluminum electrolytic capacitors, with extremely low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) values.

Aerogel Supercapacitors:

The addition of the B Series to the original A Series fulfills a wide variety of new application and engineering needs.

The B Series are ultra-high capacitance cylindrical super-capacitors designed to complement our original A Series ultra-low ESR supercapacitors. In fact, the B Series has three times the capacitance of the A Series by volume but only two times the ESR. Capacitance values range from 1F up to 50F. This combination of ultra-high capacitance and very low ESR make the B Series extremely versatile components.

PowerStor's F Series is a flat-pack Aerogel Capacitor using similar packaging material & technique as Lithiumion polymer batteries. Replacing steel multi-layer foil-polymer packaging results in a thinner, lighter cans with this new super-capacitor. The F Series flat-pack Aerogel Capacitors can be designed for space constrained applications that require either an ultra-low impedance or high energy density.

Features

Aerogel Capacitors have characteristics that make them ideal for applications in electronic circuits and portable devices

Features include:

Extremely low ESR (for high power and low loss during operation

Ultra low leakage current (can hold a charge for several weeks)

Very high charge-discharge cycle life (virtually infinite when compared to batteries)

Wide operating temperature range

High useable capacity (high energy that can be discharged quickly)

The Aerogel Capacitor's breakthrough low resistance enables its use in pulse power and electronic circuitry applications that other types of super-capacitors cannot address. For example, an Aerogel Capacitor the size of a "AA" alkaline battery can deliver up to 35 Amperes of peak current.

Compared to batteries, these devices can be:

Used to deliver frequent pulses of energy without any detrimental effects or reduced life

Charged very quickly and safely where batteries are damaged by fast charging Cycled hundreds of thousands of times without significant degradation in performance

Applications

In general, Aerogel Capacitors are used to provide:

Pulse power characterized by short, high current pulses delivered to a load, allowing the use of a smaller power supply or battery.

Hold-up power or bridge power to a device or equipment for seconds, minutes or days when the main power or battery fails or when the battery is swapped out.

More efficient battery packs. By paralleling a low impedance, high power Aerogel Capacitor and a high impedance, high energy battery, the result is a low impedance, high power and high energy battery pack, known as a hybrid battery-capacitor.

Wireless Communications – Pulse power during transmission in GSM cell phones, 1.5 and 2-way pagers, and other data communication devices.

Mobile Computing – Hold-up and pulse power in portable data terminals, personal digital assistants, and all other portable devices using microprocessors.

Industrial – Solenoid and valve actuation, electronic door locks and uninterruptible power supplies Power Conversion – Increased efficiency in high pulse rate designs.

Automotive and other electronics.
